Newly renamed Sonya Miller Women of Distinction event April 29

The name has changed but the popular Women of Distinction event’s purpose remains the same: to honor exceptional women leaders in each of the communities Jewish organizations.

The Federation announced at last year’s Women of Distinction program that the event would be renamed the “Sonya Miller Women of Distinction” in memory of the St. Petersburg native who spent her life building and strengthening the Jewish community. She passed away in January 2017 at the age of 88.

This year’s program will take place on April 29 at Miller’s own temple, Temple Beth-El, 400 Pasadena Ave S, St. Petersburg, at 2:30 pm.

The event annually draws more than 300 people – men as well as women – from across the region to honor the two dozen women who have been selected as the annual recipients. The winner of the Dawkins Young Woman of Distinction award also will be announced. The award is named in honor of Jewish Press owners Jim and Karen Dawkins.

The event will feature a special art exhibit on loan from the Israeli Consulate entitled “Wonder Woman.”

Ticket and event information will be available about April 1 on the Federation’s website and by mailed invitations. The nomination process is currently underway by synagogues and Jewish organizations.

For more information about this and other Federation events, visit or call (727) 530-3223.
