Ann Haendel with award Ann Haendel with award Backward glance earns award

Ann Haendel of St. Pete Beach, has won a citywide writing contest with a story inspired by the discussion at a recent Rosh Hodesh gathering at Congregation B’nai Israel’s monthly women-only brunch. When the St. Pete Library announced a competition for a short story that had to begin with, “He (or she) turned away without so much as a backward glance,” Haendel said she knew she had her tale. The particular brunch session that came to her mind was the one Ricki Lewis led on Lot’s wife. Haendel’s story is on the congregation’s website.
