4 rabbis to debate essential human ingredient at Shavuot program

Three congregations in Pinellas County will hold a community evening of celebration and learning to mark Shavuot, also known as Z’man Matan Torateinu – the Festival of the Giving of the Torah.

The event is a collaboration between Conservative Congregation Beth Shalom of Clearwater and two Reform congregations, Temple B’nai Israel of Clearwater and Temple Beth-El in St. Petersburg. The celebration and night of learning will be held on erev Shavuot, Tuesday, May 30, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Beth Shalom, 1325 S. Belcher Road.

The program will feature “The 4 Rabbis – A Values Oratorio – We don’t sing, we debate,” with Rabbi Michael Torop of Beth-El, Rabbi Daniel Treiser of Temple B’nai Israel and Rabbis David Weizman and Danielle Upbin, both of Beth Shalom.

They will engage in a discussion of whether the most essential ingredient of the “human project” is compassion, peace, righteousness or truth. The rabbis will debate and the congregants will vote. There will also be a Yizkor memorial service and a cheesecake nosh. Admission is free but an RSVP are requested to any of the participating congregations by Wednesday, May 24.
