St. Pete congregation educator attends seminar

Maureen Sechan, director of lifelong learning at Congregation B’nai Israel in St. Petersburg, recently attended the New Director’s Institute, a professional development seminar for religious school directors sponsored by United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.

Participants were treated to an educational experience at Pearlstone Conference Center near Baltimore. The program included a visit to an onsite farm and participants threshed wheat while studying text from Deuteronomy about leaving some of the harvest behind for those in greater need.

“We engaged in text study and participated in an activity designed to help 21st century educators connect with ancient Jewish farmers,” Sechan said, adding that the experience has inspired her to plan a garden at her synagogue, for use in educational lessons for those young and old.
