2 rabbis offer classes on Israel, Jewish values

Rabbi Daniel Treiser of Temple B’nai Israel in Clearwater and Rabbi Michael Torop of Temple Beth-El in St. Petersburg will explore the significance of Israel for Jewish life today in a two-semester, adult education course.

Called iEngage, the program was created by The Shalom Hartman Institute, a center in Israel focused on facilitating conversations about Judaism, religious pluralism, and Israel. It is being taught in the U.S., Canada and Australia.

The course is free and open to the Jewish community, thanks to a partnership with the Jewish Federation of Pinellas & Pasco Counties.

The course will be divided into two semesters. The first will be titled “Engaging Israel: Foundations for a New Relationship.” Rabbi Treiser will teach the classes at Temple B’nai Israel, 1685 S. Belcher Road, on Tuesdays from Oct. 25 through Jan. 10 from 7 to 9 p.m.

The spring semester will be titled “Jewish Values and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.” Rabbi Torop will teach that session at Temple Beth-El, 400 S. Pasadena Ave. Classes will be on Thursdays. Feb. 9 through May 25 from 7 to 9 p.m.

While there is no charge to attend, reservations are necessary and individuals must commit to attend a majority of the classes.

RSVP by Oct. 1 by calling Temple Beth-El at (727) 347-6136, or Temple B’nai Israel at (727) 531-5829.
