When you think about the Jewish community 30 years ago, the name that immediately comes to mind is Charlie Rutenberg. Charlie’s name is synonymous with the golden years of the Federation and the Jewish community.

Those of us who were active in Jewish philanthropy in Pinellas County at that time remember all too well the important role that Charlie played in building this community. From the Federation to the Golda Meir Center, to the Kent Jewish Community Center and Menorah Manor, and Temple B’nai Israel – Charlie graced them all with his larger-than-life personality. Every Jewish cause was meaningful and every cause bore his stamp of approval and benefitted from his generosity.

I am honored that I played a small, but significant role in those years. As president of the Jewish Federation of Pinellas County, president of the Kent Jewish Center and president the Golda Meir /Kent Jewish Center, I was able to work hand in glove with this great man and humanitarian to help the Jewish community prosper.

It was my great honor to help Jim and Karen Dawkins launch the Jewish Press and I wish them continued success for many years to come. It is important for the community to come together with love and fellowship, and with renewed strength and commitment so that it can flourish and grow.
