Federation plans kids’ book swap, family barbecue; introduce new program

The Jewish Federation of Pinellas & Pasco Counties will be hosting a back-to-school book swap and family barbecue on Sunday, Aug. 21.

The free event, open to all families with children ages 6 months to 11 years old, will include a barbecue lunch. The program will be held from 12:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. Location still to be determined.

Families are invited to recycle PJ Library books their children have outgrown. The Federation will redistribute these books to temples, synagogues and area grandparents who would like to have Jewish books in their home for their grandchildren.

In addition to PJ Library books, children are encouraged to bring other books that they would like to trade with their peers.

The event will also introduce a new extension of the PJ Library program, which has been delivering Jewish books to local children up to age 8 for free each month since 2008.

PJ Our Way, a “kid-driven” program, is now available for children ages 9-11.

Participants in the new program choose their books online, creating an experience tailored to their own interests and reading level. The website includes summaries and author bios, along with ratings, reviews, and video trailers created by kids themselves.

PJ Our Way members can take polls and quizzes, participate in monthly interviews and challenges, post their own reviews or videos, and comment on blog posts. The PJ Our Way site is a completely moderated space and has a parent blog, where parents can read about the books offered and find family discussion questions for each book. Parents can also find out what values or topics are covered before choosing a book.

Families will have the opportunity to register their children for PJ Our Way at the event, at no cost.

In addition, each family attending this event will be given the Federation’s Family Tzdedakah Kit. This interactive kit encourages families to sit down and create a culture of kindness. The kit includes a Tzedakah box and tzedakah planning tools including calendars, kid-centric organizations to save money for, volunteer opportunities and even ways to be a mensch by just being kind every day.

Every child who has received PJ Library books locally will get an invitation to this back to school kick-off event and all families are welcome regardless of PJ Library past enrollment.
