Author to speak about faith, freedom

Dr. Allan Jacob Alexander of St. Petersburg will speak about his real-life saga of faith, fortitude and freedom as he describes how he and his wife fled Soviet Russia and made a new life in America.

Alexander will speak about this and God’s guiding hand in his life when he lectures on Thursday, June 2 at 7 p.m. at the Chabad Jewish Center, 4010 Park St., St. Petersburg.

The title of his lecture is Checkmate Run, which is also the title of a novel he has written about a young man’s deadly struggle with the KGB t o survive anti- Semitism and the brutal Soviet regime, based on his incredible life story.

Alexander was born in Moscow. He was a published poet by the age of 18 and beat the odds of Jewish admission quotas by being accepted by the medical school. His collaboration with an avant-garde literary magazine ended with a six-month, politically motivated incarceration. After his release, he returned to his medical studies and became involved in the Soviet Jewry struggle for freedom to emigrate. In 1975 Alexander, his wife, and their young son left the Soviet Union, arriving in the U.S. with just a couple of suitcases, $33 in their pockets and a lot of aspirations. All three went on to become practicing physicians locally.

There is no charge for those who RSVP. For those who do not, admission is $10. There will also be a wine and cheese tasting. To RSVP or for more information, go to www.chabadsp.com or call (727) 344-4900.
