Bay area group to perform ‘Cantors Cabaret’

The Bay Area Cantorial Association (BACA) presents its 13th annual concert, “There’s No Business Like Shul Business: A Cantors Cabaret!” in two concerts with cantors and cantorial soloists performing next month in Tampa and Sarasota.

The concert will focus on cabaret, stage and film selections with a connection to Jewish writers or Jewish experience. BACA presents its annual concert on or near Shabbat Shira (Sabbath of Song), when it has become customary around the world to hold special music-and song-related services and events.

The first performance will be at Congregation Kol Ami, 3919 Moran Road, Tampa, on Thursday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. The second, hosted by Temple Emanu-El, 151 McIntosh Road, Sarasota, will be on Thursday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m.

This year’s concert participants – in either one or both concerts – are: Cliff Abramson (Temple Sinai, Sarasota), Riselle Bain (Temple Israel of Highlands County, Sebring), Laura Berkson (Temple B’nai Israel, Clearwater), Rick Berlin (Parkway Jewish Center, Pittsburgh, PA /Venice), Deborrah Cannizzaro (Cong. Kol Ami, Tampa), Jonathan Schultz (Cong. B’nai Israel, St. Petersburg), Jodi Sered-Lever (Congregation Mekor Shalom, Tampa), Murray Simon (Temple Beth Sholom, Hamden, CT/Bradenton). Marci Vitkus (Jewish Cong. of Venice), with pianist Tara Richards Swartzbaugh (adjunct professor University of Tampa).

Tickets are available at the door of both concerts for a suggested donation of $18 each; no one will be turned away and all donations are gratefully accepted.

To date, BACA has raised more than $42,000 for cantorial scholarships at the H. L. Miller Cantorial School of the Jewish Theological Seminary of Judaism (Conservative) and the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music of Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion (Reform), both in New York.

Call Congregation Kol Ami at (813) 962- 6338 for details.
