Jews and Arabs get half off for eating hummus together at Israeli restaurant

An Israeli hummus restaurant near the coastal city of Netanya is offering 50 percent discounts on hummus for tables with both Jews and Arabs. A manager of the Hummus Bar, located in Kfar Vitkin, told the Times of Israel that “several” tables of Jews and Arabs have taken advantage of the offer since it began Oct. 13.

“By us we don’t have Arabs! But we also don’t have Jews … By us we’ve got human beings!” the restaurant posted on Facebook. “And real excellent Arab hummus! And great Jewish falafel!”

The move was motivated by the growing unrest across Israel between Jews and Palestinians.

“If there’s anything that can bring together these peoples, it’s hummus,” manager Kobi Tzafrir told the Times of Israel.

Israel Space Agency, NASA sign cooperation agreement

JERUSALEM — The Israel Space Agency signed a cooperation agreement with its U.S. counterpart, NASA on Oct. 13 at the 66th International Astronautical Congress in Jerusalem. More than 2,000 people from 58 nations gathered for the five-day conference.

“You are known for your innovation and technology, and this agreement gives us the opportunity to cooperate with Israel on the journey to Mars as we open up new opportunities for all of our children,” NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said at the signing ceremony with the Israeli agency’s director, Menachem Kidron. “We have cooperated in the past, but this agreement is bigger and better.”

Under the agreement, NASA and the Israel Space Agency will participate in joint missions, exchange scientists and scientific data, and share training facilities.

NASA and Israel signed their first cooperation agreement in 1996, which led to the training in the United States of Ilan Ramon, Israel’s first astronaut, who flew on the space shuttle Columbia in 2003. Ramon and the flight’s six other astronauts died on Feb. 1, 2003, when Columbia broke apart during reentry into the atmosphere over Texas on its way to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

High school soccer fans use ‘Dreidel Song’ as taunt

Fans at a high school soccer game in Connecticut are accused of using “The Dreidel Song” as an anti-Semitic taunt directed at an opposing team. Fans of the South Windsor boys’ varsity soccer team chanted verses from the Hanukkah tune during a game this month against Hall High School in West Hartford, a town with a large Jewish population. No other chants were heard the rest of the game, according to reports. Hall won the game.

South Windsor High School administrators met with students who chanted the song during the game, the district’s superintendent of schools, Kate Carter, said in a statement, the Hartford Courant reported .

Carter said the school would work with the Anti- Defamation League to provide programming for the students.

A video of the chanting was captured on a cellphone. The video was aired on NBC Connecticut.
