Gulf Coast Jewish Family and Community Services is currently conducting one of its twice-a-year drives to fill the William and Sally Israel Food Pantry.

During the past year, Gulf Coast has received more than 15,000 pounds of donated food and provided food assistance to more than 1,700 families of all ethnicities and religions. The food pantry also offers kosher food to Jewish families who keep kashrut.

“3.1 million Floridians have food insecurity, and 28 percent of them are children. Fifteen percent of Pinellas and Pasco residents live below the poverty line. Our food pantry is a life-line to many of our families,” noted Gail Allen, JFS family support coordinator.

To keep its shelves stocked, the food pantry relies on two major food drives and through donations by individuals and businesses. The current food drive, known as Operation Isaiah, runs through the end of September.

“We are always excited with the support we receive from our local synagogues and organizations supporting our programs, “ noted Cindy Minetti, senior director of Jewish Family Services & Refugee Services at Gulf Coast.

Particularly at the High Holidays, synagogues ask congregants to fill grocery bags for the food pantry.

The following items are most needed: canned fruit, canned tuna, salmon, chicken and sardines, hearty soups and mixes, peanut butter and jelly, pasta and sauces, rice and beans, cereal and powdered milk, sugar free and low sodium items. Monetary donations or gift cards to Publix, Walmart and Target are always welcome.

In addition to the non-perishable food offered through the food pantry, some families receive grocery store gift cards through the Chicken for Shabbat program. The idea is that families who receive the grocery gift cards are able to purchase fresh food for their Shabbat meal or holiday meals.

Monetary donations or donated gift cards provide support for the Chicken for Shabbat program. This year, through individual donations and funds raised through Religious School tzedakah projects, Gulf Coast JFCS distributed 450 grocery gift cards with a total value of more than $8,000.

All local donations go directly to supporting Pinellas and Pasco families. Donations may be made by mail to Gulf Coast JFCS, 14041 Icot Blvd., Clearwater, FL 33760 or online at Indicate Food Pantry on your donation.
