Retired general to speak in Tampa about Gaza War

An assessment of last year’s Gaza War will be presented on Thursday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. by retired Army Maj. Gen. Michael Jones, former chief of staff for U.S. Central Command in Tampa. The program will he held at the Tampa JCC & Federation on the Maureen & Douglas Cohn Jewish Community Campus.

Maj. Gen. Jones participated in an independent task force with four other retired general officers, sponsored by the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA), that conducted a detailed assessment from a military point of view of the 2014 Gaza War and what lessons the U.S. should learn from it.

The report of the task force stands in sharp contrast to a recent United Nations report that was highly critical of Israel Defense Forces and not very critical of Hamas.

The task force found that while Israel Defense Forces used restraint and tried to avoid civilian causalties, Hamas fighters used civilians as shields.

Maj. Gen. Jones served in the U.S. Army for 34 years, including tours as the director of operations and the chief of staff for U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the joint combatant command that oversaw the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan

This program, arranged by the Tampa Jewish Community Center & Federation and Congregation Beth Am, is free, but space is limited. Register online at or call Loni Lindsay at (813) 769-2802.
