Hillel Academy students learn about, raise funds for Nepal earthquake relief

Students at Hillel Academy are currently working on a two-week project to learn about Nepal and to raise funds for the victims of the recent earthquake there.

In addition to raising funds, the students will study the Jewish values of helping others, performing acts of kindness and humanitarian aid. They will also learn about the geography of Nepal, why earthquakes happen, and about that nation’s people.

One Hillel Academy parent, Yoav Rappaport, has even been able to present students with a unique, perspective of what is happening in Nepal now.

Rappaport, who works for International Medical Corps, is doing GIS mapping work to help relief workers reach affected areas. His team has been working in Nepal since the night of the earthquake. He visited the school to share information, including first-hand stories, with Hillel Academy students.

The students have been asked to earn money to donate in addition to collecting any money their families and friends might want to contribute. The intent is for the students to feel connected to the relief effort fundraising – not just ask for and collect money.

One boy in kindergarten brought the entire contents of his piggy bank – $143.15 – to donate to the cause.

Those who would like to donate can do so by sending a check to International Medical Corps in care of Hillel Academy, 2020 W. Fletcher Ave., Tampa, Florida 33612. The envelopes should be marked attention to Betty Fisher, business manager.
