Pope Francis to ‘knight’ New York rabbi

NEW YORK – Pope Francis will confer papal knighthood on Rabbi Arthur Schneier of Manhattan’s Park East Synagogue. Schneier, the founder of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation and a Holocaust survivor, is being honored for his work promoting peace and mutual understanding, according to Vatican officials. Schneier will formally become a knight of Saint Sylvester at a ceremony on Monday, April 27, at the official residence of the Vatican’s representative to the United Nations, Archbishop Bernardito Auza.

Other members of the Order of Saint Sylvester include the late entertainer Bob Hope and Oskar Schnidler, the German industrialist credited with saving more than 1,000 Jews from the Nazis.

When the last pope, Benedict XVI, visited New York in April 2008, he visited Schneier’s synagogue, where the two exchanged gifts.

Rivlin, Netanyahu spurn Jimmy Carter

JERUSALEM — Israeli President Reuven Rivlin and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected invitations to meet with former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. The invitations reportedly were declined after consulting with the Foreign Ministry and the National Security Council, Haaretz reported.

Carter, who reportedly will visit Israel in the coming weeks, has planned meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

An unnamed senior government official said the recommendation to not meet with Carter came over his “anti-Israeli stance” in recent years, including his strong criticism of Israel during last summer’s conflict with Gaza. Israel did, however, approve Carter’s request to visit Gaza.

Carter, who wrote a book, Palestine: Peace not Apartheid, is a member of The Elders, an international group of elder statesmen who advance peace and reconciliation. Carter also has called for the labeling of goods that originate in the West Bank, and said the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was among the factors that led to the deadly attacks in January in Paris.

Jeb Bush at NY day school rips Iran deal as ‘very naive’

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, a likely Republican presidential candidate, criticized the Iran nuclear framework agreement as “very naive” during a visit to a Manhattan Jewish day school.

Bush made the remark on Thursday, April 23, in a closed-door question-and-answer session with high school students at the Ramaz Upper School, the Washington Free Beacon reported. He said the framework agreement signed last month between Iran and world powers would “create instability for a long, long while.”

“There’s some belief [in the Obama administration] that the ayatollahs will just go quietly into the night,” Bush said, according to the Free Beacon. “It’s hard for me to imagine that because while we were negotiating, [the Iranian regime] continued with the ‘Death to America’ rallies every weekend.”

Bush spoke at the prestigious modern Orthodox school in honor of Israel Independence Day. Earlier in the day, Bush distanced himself from former Secretary of State James Baker, who is currently one of his foreign policy advisers, CNN reported. Baker, who is believed to have said “F*** the Jews” while serving as secretary under Bush’s father, George H.W. Bush, criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the recent J Street conference.
