Four years on, Jewish Burial Society celebrates cemetery turnaround

Chapel Hill Memorial Park is celebrating its fourth anniversary after being acquired and restored as Tampa Bay’s only Jewish cemetery owned and operated by an independent, not-for-profit corporation, the Jewish Burial Society of Pinellas County, Inc.

Chapel Hill Memorial Park upholds Jewish burial traditions in Menorah Gardens and as the only cemetery in Tampa Bay under “Jewish control,” is committed to having a beautiful, perpetual resting place for the families of the Jewish community, according to the Burial Society’s board of trustees.

The Burial Society credits the board, cemetery management, and staff along with the financial supports of members of the Jewish community for contributing to the cemetery’s turnaround.

Originally owned by Congregation B’nai Israel, the cemetery was later sold to a large, national cemetery company, which let the property decline from its successes in the early years of its development. The Burial Society, formed by members of Congregation B’nai Israel and Temple Beth-El, bought the cemetery on April 1, 2011.

What changes have occurred since the Jewish Burial Society took ownership? The improvements include:

• Completed an initial, community supported fundraiser to obtain seed money for the purchase of the cemetery and to supplement revenues for operation and development expenses

• Repaired its irrigation system.

• Refinished its roads.

• Upgraded its signs.

• Hired competent and dedicated staff members.

• Beautified the grounds with new grass.

• Properly maintained the grounds, groomed the trees and shrubbery and eliminated unwanted insects.

• Installed a wash basin for hand washing as well as rock bins.

• Developed competitive pricing.

• Reestablished the sale of estate lots beautified by shrubbery.

• Developed plans for an annual giving campaign to further assure the long term viability of the cemetery.

• Developed a plan for a new section with monument headstones to complement the garden style monuments of the rest of the cemetery.

• Responded to the community by providing same day interment when necessary.

• Provided free unveiling set up.

Chapel Hill Memorial Park is located off Ulmerton Road, at 12905 Wild Acres Road, Largo.
