Hillel students from USF to be honored at PRIMER brunch

The effort of students at USF Hillel who successfully beat back a BDS (boycott, divest and sanction) resolution against Israel will be honored on Sunday, Feb. 15 by Greater Tampa Bay B’nai B’rith Unit 2603 at the sixth annual PRIMER (Promoting Responsibility in Middle East Reporting) Advocacy Award brunch.

The award will be presented in conjunction with the Jewish Federation of Pinellas & Pasco Counties and the Tampa Jewish Federation and will recognize students’ efforts to defeat a BDS resolution initiated by the Students for Justice in Palestine group at USF. Both students and Rabbi Ed Rosenthal, director of the Hillels of the Florida Suncoast are expected to be on hand to accept the award.

At an AIPAC reception in Tampa Bay last year, Jonathan Kessler, AIPAC’s National Leadership Development director, said of the USF students: “The level of sophistication of Israel activism exhibited by USF students is so far above the norm that it should serve as a model for other campuses around the country.”

PRIMER was founded in 1992 by the late Norm Gross, Ph.D, and others as a means to combat bias and unfair criticism of Israel in the media. In 2009, the organization created the Dr. Norman H. Gross Advocacy Award through the TOP Jewish Foundation to recognize local individuals and groups who best embody the motto “silence is not golden. Gross was the first recipient, with other winners including Herb Swarzman, Steve Schwersky and Eric Steckler.

The award event will be held at the Inn On The Pond, 2010 Greenbriar Blvd, Clearwater, beginning at 10 a.m.

Cost of the bagel and lox brunch is $10, payable at the door. RSVP to Stuart Berger at (727) 480-5721 or by emailing him at sberger@gcjfcs.org no later than Thursday, Feb. 12.
