‘Sunday Simcha’ co-hosts appeal for funds to keep them on the air

As the Sunday Simcha radio show approaches its 36th year on the radio airwaves in Tampa Bay, financial support is at an all-time low, and an appeal is being made to the Jewish community for support.

The funding “dropped off a few years ago when the economy tanked, but never has come back as things got better,” say the show’s volunteer co-hosts Kevin Frye and Steve Schwersky.

The show airs on non-commercial, listener-sponsored WMNF, 88.5 FM, on Sundays from noon to 2 p.m.

The on-air, winter fund-drive will take place on Sunday, Feb. 8 during show hours.

“We are one of the few cities in America to enjoy an ongoing, weekly Jewish radio program, and ours is on FM – so the music actually sounds good. We are also not censored – we can discuss what we feel is relevant to our audience including a Jewish perspective on issues in Israel; we can conduct interviews with whomever we want; nobody tells us what we can and can’t do. This is a rare situation,” the co-hosts said in a prepared statement.

The fund-raising goals for the Sunday Simcha is $5,900 from 70 callers/pledgers. All pledges made from now until the show airs on Feb. 8 will count toward the goals.

There are several ways to help:

• Send an email to and give your name, address, and the amount to be pledged. A form will be mailed and folks can pay as they see fit.

• Visit and click on the Tip-Jar at the bottom of the homepage. This will direct people to a secure website where a donation can be made that is automatically credited to the Sunday Simcha.

• Call in to the show at (813) 238- 8001 on Sunday, Feb. 8 from noon until 2 p.m. and speak with one of the pledge volunteers who will take your information.

“Whichever method you choose, we will thank you on-air (unless you don’t want us to do so),” the co-hosts say.
