Hillels Suncoast essay contest offers scholarships

Hillels of the Florida Suncoast has announced the Rutstein Judaic Essay Contest that will award a total of $1,800 in scholarships to six Jewish undergraduate students attending college in Hillsborough, Pinellas or Sarasota counties.

Through the contest, supported by Stan and Jo Rutstein of Sarasota, Jewish undergraduate students are invited to consider the concept of the future of Judaism and their role in it.

Students are asked to write an essay of between 800 and 1,500 words that demonstrates their vision of tomorrow’s Jewish People and, specifically, how they believe they can personally ensure a Jewish future.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer Suncoast Hillels’ students the opportunity to more deeply explore their Jewish identity through creative writing,” said Stan Rutstein.

Jo Rustein added the essay contest not only will provide financial assistance to the prize winners, “but also help Hillel achieve their mission of reaching and engaging as many Jewish college students as possible.”

Each entry must be accompanied by a registration form which is available for download from the Suncoast Hillels website (www.suncoasthillels.org) or by emailing shalom@suncoasthillels.org to request a copy. The contest rules and details on how to submit essay contest entries are available on the Suncoast Hillels website.

All entries must be received no later than midnight on Wednesday, Feb. 4.

A panel of professors will judge the entries. Two first place winners will each receive $500, two second place winners will receive $250, and the two third place winners will receive $180.

For more information, visit www.suncoasthillels.org or contact Linda Wolf, assistant director for Hillels of the Florida Suncoast, at (813) 899-2788 or shalom@suncoasthillels.org.
