Jewish book fest to feature photo book on Stuart Weitzman fantasy art shoes

Jane Weitzman Jane Weitzman Following its successful opening week, the 2014-15 Tampa Jewish Book Festival continues in December with author Jane Weitzman, talking about and signing her photographic book covering the fantasy shoes once displayed at the Stuart Weitzman New York store.

Weitzman, who is past executive vice president of the highend retailer which sells women’s designer shoes, boots and handbags, will discuss her book at a champagne reception at the Stuart Weitzman store in the International Mall, 2223 N. Westshore Blvd., Tampa, on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m.

The event is open to the entire community. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at jewishtampa.com or at the door.

Weitzman’s book is titled Art & Sole, A Spectacular Collection of More Than 150 Fantasy Art Shoes From the Stuart Weitzman Collection. She notes that “art shoes are pure fantasy, constructed of unique materials in various shapes and silhouettes. The art shoes … are made from a vast array of materials” including feathers, metal, playing cards and fresh flowers. Her book displays a selection of the best of this fantasy collection, approximately 150 shoes of the more than 1,000 she has discovered and commissioned for display since the first Stuart Weitzman retail shop opened in the mid-1900s.

The idea for her book Art & Sole was inspired by her early acts of charity, which started in the shop windows of the first Stuart Weitzman stores.

“When we opened the first retail store I thought it would be important to do a breast cancer window. I had this window on Madison Avenue, actually two windows, and that’s how I really got involved,” she said. Dying several bridal shoes various shades of pink and decking out the window dressings with a rose-hued, artistic flair, she soon realized that the creative display was capturing the attention of women walking by.

The display of fantasy shoes, most not wearable but designed as eye candy, quickly made the store a destination, drawing crowds from all over the world to its windows.

She has been married to Stuart Weitzman for 47 years and never wears anything but the Stuart Weitzman brand except for athletic shoes their company does not make.

Her most prized shoes, she said are wedding shoes he gave her. Inside the shoes were inscribed with

“Made for Mrs. Stuart

Weitzman.”
