Program to focus on combating elder abuse

Senior citizens are often vulnerable to abuse – financial, emotional and physical – at the hands of businesses, family members, caregivers and so-called “friends.” The abuse can include scams, fraud, isolation and neglect.

This year, JAEDA (Jewish Alliance to End Domestic Abuse of Pinellas/Pasco Counties) is focusing on making those 55 and older, their families, and caregivers more aware of these issues and what they can do to help.

On Monday, Nov. 10, JAEDA will host a panel discussion titled, “Elder Awareness: What We Should Know to Protect Ourselves and Those We Love.” The program will be held from 1-3 p.m. at The Centre of Palm Harbor, 1500 16th St., Palm Harbor.

The panel and their topics are:

• Chris Warwick, a gerontologist and former executive director of the Haven of RCS, is a victim advocate. He will discuss domestic violence and elder abuse.

• John Herbst, an attorney from Gulf Coast Legal Services, will speak on advanced care directives.

• Pinellas County Sheriff’s Deputy Charles Skipper will speak on scams, shams and fraud.

• Sheri Gruden, a certified care manager and intake coordinator for Suncoast PACE, will discuss safety at home and community resources.

The program is open to everyone and reservations are not required. Light refreshments will be provided

The program sponsors are: JAEDA, The Centre of Palm Harbor, Gulf Coast Jewish Family and Community Services, Florida Hospital of North Pinellas and The Medical Center of Trinity. For more information, email
