Welcome home…

Rachel Dawkins, daughter of Jewish Press owners Jim and Karen Dawkins, has recently moved back to the area from New Orleans. A pediatrician, she is the medical director of the pediatric and adolescent outpatient clinic at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg and oversees the outpatient clinical experiences for the new All Children’s/Johns Hopkins residency program. Besides the job opportunity, Rachel was lured home by her dad’s great cooking and beautiful sunsets at the beach. (Two things you can’t get in NOLA) Her grandfather, Harold Wolfson of St. Pete Beach, is also pleased to have Rachel as an occasional bowling partner.

Mazel tov…

To Blanche Abraham of St. Petersburg, who celebrated her 100th birthday the weekend of July 11. Family and friends from Texas, Georgia and Wisconsin, came to celebrate. Blanche orchestrated a skit at the party. * * *

To Marilyn and Dr. Morris LeVine of St. Petersburg, who celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on July 2. Many of their 17 grandchildren and their spouses and their two great-grandchildren were in town for the Fourth of July and the kiddush at Congregation B’nai Israel in their honor on July 5.

A+ teacher…

Elyse Silver was named “Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year” for Hillsborough County Schools. Elyse has worked as an educator for 13 years and currently teaches at both Carrollwood Elementary and Twin Lakes Elementary schools in Tampa. Her parents, Deena and Larry Silver from Oldsmar, and children Thomas, John and David, couldn’t be more proud of her accomplishments.

Bar accolades…

Pinellas/Pasco Circuit Judge Raymond Gross was honored by the Clearwater Bar Association at its annual Law Day luncheon. Gross, who will be retiring at the end of the year, was given the John U. Bird Judicial Excellence Award. He was a defense attorney for some 20 years before being appointed to the bench in 1995 by then Gov. Lawton Chiles. He has served in the criminal, family and unified family court divisions during his tenure on the bench.

Big Apple debut…

Hannah Zazzaro, 21, of Palm Harbor, will make her debut on Aug. 21 at 54 Below, a New York City cabaret supper club, where Broadway luminaries the likes of Patti LuPone, Lena Hall (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) and Jeremy Jordan (Newsies and Smash) can be seen regularly. “I am so incredibly honored and excited to have been given this opportunity …” said Zazzaro, a senior musical theatre student at the University of Cincinnati – College Conservatory of Music. The Countryside High School graduate has won numerous vocal awards. She is the daughter of Harriet Fried Zazzaro, Temple Ahavat Shalom Sunday School music teacher and youth choir director.
