One-night ‘Signs of Life’ performance set for June 9

A staged reading of Signs of Life, a musical drama based on the true story of the Czech ghetto Theresienstadt – one of the most fascinating and least-known stories of the Holocaust – will be performed Monday, June 9 at 8 p.m. at the American Stage Theater Company.

The reading, with costumes and props, is of a drama that takes place in the fortress town of Terezin, located only 40 miles outside of Prague, during World War II. The Germans occupied the town and renamed it Theresienstadt.

They sent 144,000 people to Theresienstadt, but only 17,000 survived. Signs of Life introduces its audience to world-renowned composers, artists, writers, musicians who were sent there, and explores the paradox in which their own art is forced to become a tool for their own demise.

Directed by Gail Humphries, the musical is performed by the same cast of students and graduates from American University in Washington. DC, who received standing ovations during their performances in Prague.

All proceeds from this one-night-only performance will benefit The Florida Holocaust Museum and American Stage Theater Company. The cost is $36 for general seating, $72 for limited angel seating. The theater is at 163 Third St. N. in St. Petersburg.
