Screenwriter to speak at two Chabad centers


David N. Weiss David N. Weiss Award-winning screenwriter David N. Weiss (Shrek 2, The Smurfs movies, Rugrats) will present a series of entertaining talks featuring personal and professional stories at appearances at the Chabad Jewish Center of St. Petersburg and Chabad of Pinellas County in Palm Harbor.

On Monday, May 5 in St. Petersburg, Weiss will present “From Hollywood to Holy Hood,” beginning at 7 p.m. Then on Friday night and Shabbat morning, May 9-10, Weiss will be enrapturing the congregation at Chabad of Pinellas County

Weiss’s tales center on his journey from secular Jew to Christian youth leader to Modern Orthodox/ blockbusting screenwriter. “When you find yourself under a chuppah in a Presbyterian Church being married by a Jews for Jesus rabbi, you know something has to give,” Weiss quips.

Weiss has a number of film and TV credits, most notably the Rugrats series for which he was nominated for an Emmy as co-head writer, as well t Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius and the MGM classic, All Dogs Go to Heaven.

Having directed several awarding-winning shorts, Weiss has also written three children’s books, is a member of the Motion Picture Academy, and former vice president of the Writers Guild of America. He lives in Los Angeles, with his wife, Eliana and two children, plus two cats, two birds, a tortoise and Sandy the dog. On the side, he enjoys traveling the world to teach and lecture on writing and religion.
