Gulf Coast JFCS food drive, Million Dollar Challenge runs through April 30

Operation Afikomen, Gulf Coast Jewish Family & Community Services’ semi-annual food drive, is underway and continues through April 30.

GCJFCS is again participating in the One Million Dollar Feinstein Challenge. The more food the community donates, the more dollars GCJFCS will receive from the Feinstein Foundation to purchase additional food. Last year, Operation Afikomen brought in more than 3,000 pounds of food and additional cash donations. The agency hopes to get to 5,000 pounds of food this year with the community’s help.

In its 17th consecutive year, the Feinstein Challenge will divide $1 million among nonprofit hunger-fighting agencies nationwide to help them collect food and raise funds this March and April.

After a busy holiday season, GCJFCS needs to replenish its food pantry, which is primarily stocked through donations. “Our clients rely on the food pantry to help them feed their families. With cutbacks in SNAP (food stamp program) and in other food pantries, we have had an increase in clients with food insecurity,” noted Cindy Stern Minetti, Jewish Family Services director.

Non-perishable items most needed include canned fruits, canned fish such as tuna and salmon, hearty soups, peanut butter and jelly, pasta and rice, tomato sauce, canned vegetables, cereal, powdered milk, and sugar free and low-sodium items. Cash and gift cards are also welcome.

Drop off locations are:

Clearwater — Gulf Coast Jewish Family & Community Services, Congregation Beth Shalom and Temple B’nai Israel.

St. Petersburg — Chabad of St Petersburg, Congregation B’nai Israel and Temple Beth-El.

Largo —Jewish Federation of Pinellas & Pasco Counties.

Palm Harbor — Temple Ahavat Shalom

Tarpon Springs — Congregation B’nai Emmunah

Pasco County — JCC of West Pasco
