Bar Mitzvah boy?

It took 59 years, but Arthur Matthew “Matt” Rosen will become a bar mitzvah in December at Congregation Beth Sholom in Gulfport. Matt says when he was growing up in Cincinnati, his mother offered him the option of having a bar mitzvah, but it didn’t seem important at the time. However, Matt always remembered his father’s words: “He told me that if I ever wanted to become a bar mitzvah, I could become a bar mitzvah, and that time is now.” Matt is especially grateful to Dr. Paul Cohen, a volunteer teacher at the shul, who taught him Hebrew, his Haftorah and other aspects of the bar mitzvah. One motivation for the bar mitzvah, Matt says, is to draw attention to Beth Sholom, a small independent congregation. Of course, he’s also looking forward to family and friends coming in from all over the country for the big day on Dec. 21 and would love everyone in the Jewish community to join him, too. Mazel tov, Matt.
