An eyewitness account of the protests in Egypt

Editor’s Note: (UPDATE: February 9) The story below is the firsthand account of the protests in Egypt from Joshua R. Goodman. Goodman is originally from Palm Beach Gardens, FL and he received his master’s degree in Middle East History from Tel Aviv University. He specializes in Egypt with his thesis on tribe-state relations and national identity in Egypt. Goodman was in Cairo where he witnessed the protests from the beginning until he was evacuated on the first U.S. embassy flight to Athens on Monday, Jan. 31. Although his camera was confiscated, he kept a detailed account of the events as they transpired. His account was distributed to the media by the Jewish Policy Center think tank, after first appearing as a JPC exclusive on its website. The JPC describes Goodman’s observations and opinions as those of a Jewish foreigner who is an expert on Egypt and understands the events that took place in the historical and political context of Egypt and the Middle East.
