SYLVIA BARON, 93, of St. Petersburg, died June 14. Born in New York, NY she was a bookkeeper in electronics. Survivors include her son and daughter in-law, Alex and Barbara; sister, Rosalind Zielinski; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The family suggests memorials may be made to Suncoast Hospice. ROSE “ROSIE JEAN” FRIELICH, 97, of St. Petersburg, died May 29. She was born in Zanesville, OH and had moved here many years ago. She had been the past president and honorary president of the Harriet Glazer Chapter of the Asthmatic Children’s Aid. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Rochelle and Gerald Goldman, Chicago; sister, Geneva Paroly, Scottsdale, AZ; sister-in-law, Sara Teitelbaum; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. SASHA BRYN HARRIMAN, 29, of Sarasota, died May 31. She grew up in Clearwater and attended Durant High School in Plant City, graduating from Osceola High School in 1999. She attended the University of Florida where she pursued a degree from the College of Business, later moving to New York City where her passion turned to the culinary arts. Survivors include her mother, Suzan Alexander; father, Malcolm Harriman and stepmother Alysa Harriman; two sisters, Sarah Harriman and Cassie Harriman. The family suggests donations be made to the memorial fund in her name at Vincent House in Pinellas Park.
JOSEPH KATS, 60, of Clearwater, died June 3. He was born in Moldova and had worked as an automotive mechanic for many years. Survivors include his wife, Tcilie; two sons and daughter-in-law, Edward Kats and Albert and Helen Kats; mother, Ettle Kats; brother, Moishe Kats; two granddaughters. (David C. BERNICE “BUNNIE” KATZ, 82, of St. Petersburg, died June 7. A member of one of the pioneer Jewish families in St. Petersburg, she was a native of the city and graduated from St. Petersburg High School in 1945. She and her late husband Abe owned and operated Katz’s Grocery in downtown St. Petersburg for more than 35 years. She was a lifelong member of Congregation B’nai Israel and its Sisterhood, serving on various committees and projects including being Sisterhood president. Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law; Sandra and Herb Brasch, St. Petersburg and Ilene and Marc Horowitz, New York; four grandchildren. SHULAMITH SALEM, 85, of Pinellas Park, died June 11. Born in Israel she was a writer and an artist. In 1989 she took a work-oriented trip to Russia where she had several meetings with Kremlin members and made appeals on behalf of imprisoned physicist Dr. Boris Genis. In 1990 she was awarded a commendation by the Ohio legislature for contributions to revisions of the Ohio divorce code. She later helped introduce a bill emphasizing changes in the tax laws for artists, writers and filmmakers. Survivors include three sons, Ronald, Michael and Jonathan. (David C. BARBARA STERN, 85, of St. Petersburg, died May 30. A native of Queens, NY, she moved here 60 years with her late husband Robert. She had worked for many years as a travel agent. MURRAY STEGER, 77, of Wurtsboro, NY and Port Richey, died June 2. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was a winter resident here and one of the founders instrumental in building Young Israel Chabad in Palm Harbor. He also assisted in the building of many Mikvos. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Congregation Ezrath Israel in Ellenville, NY, Young Israel Chabad in Palm Harbor and Young Israel of Deerfield Beach. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Helen; son, Richard S. Steger, of Brooklyn; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie Steger-Cohen and Mitchel Cohen, of Great Neck, NY; sister and brother-in-law, Sheindy and Walter Berger, of Far Rockaway, NY; three grandchildren. FAYE S. TRUSSEL, 85, of St. Petersburg, formerly of New Port Richey, died May 27. Born in Jacksonville, she was a third generation Floridian. She retired from Stanley Kaplan Education Center as Central Florida Administrator. She was a member of the Jewish Community Center of West Pasco County. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Al Jackson; brother and sister-in-law, Bernard and Ceil Sachs; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Joan and Jack Orensky and Lois and Ernie Markowitz; two daughters-in-law, Susanne Trussel and Debbie Trussel; four grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren. JANINE WARSAW, 77, of St. Petersburg, died June 2. Born in Milwaukee, WI she was the founding editor of literary magazine Story Quarterly and the former editor of Trial Diplomacy Journal. She also authored two nonfiction books on trial lawyers. Survivors include her husband, Robert, children; Dayle Miller, Nancy Steen, Jeanne Warsaw-Gazga; sisters, Myrna Brin, Karen Medoff Heffernan; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren.
