Jerusalem restaurant picketed for selling chametz

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Dozens of ultra-Orthodox Jewish men demonstrated outside a Jerusalem restaurant that sells chametz during Passover.

The demonstration marks the third year in a row that the Iwo Burger restaurant has been targeted during the holiday. Police dispersed the protesters after they prevented employees from entering the restaurant and tore down signs.

Under Israel’s chametz law, merchants are not permitted to display a chametz product for sale in public. A judge in 2007 ruled that the burger restaurant, as well as four others, did not violate the law by selling chametz since it was done inside the establishments and was not visible from the street.
