Rabbinically Speaking
It is providential that this week’s issue of the Jewish Press focuses on marriage, because this week’s Torah portion, Terumah discusses the building of the Mishkan, the Tabernacle, which was the ultimate Jewish home.
The Torah recounts the details of the Tabernacle, starting with the instruction to build the Holy Ark (Aron Ha- Kodesh), then the Table, the Menorah, the altar and then the structure.
The obvious question is: Surely the Torah should have started of by instructing us how to build the structure, and then give us the details about its furniture?
The Torah, however is teaching us an important lesson: before you build your home, know what your priorities are. Make sure that it will contain Torah values (symbolized by the Ark), that it will be hospitable (the Table), filled with Mitzvot (The Menorah), and self-scarifice (the Altar).
Before we build a home, we must know what our mission statement is, then we are blessed with good fortune — or as it is known in Hebrew — Mazel Tov!
