“Help change the world” says Jewish Federation of Pinellas and Pasco Counties’ Super Sunday co-chair Jonathan Bowman, “by volunteering to help on Feb. 21, or by answering your telephone and making a gift to the Federation when we call, you can.”
This year Super Sunday is being chaired by Bowman, Melanie Present, and the Young Adult Leadership Council: Brian Fox, Dan Frenden and Amy Hall.
Super Sunday is the largest, community fundraising effort of the year for the local Jewish Federation.
On Super Sunday, community volunteers make a minimum of more than 1,000 phone calls to members of the local Jewish community who have not yet made a pledge to the Federation. The hope each year is to have enough volunteers so that every Jewish household can be called.
“The Jewish Federation of Pinellas and Pasco Counties serves as the umbrella fundraiser for local Jewish organizations in our area, as well as overseas Jewish needs,” said Federation Executive Director Bonnie Friedman.
Local beneficiaries include the Pinellas County Jewish Day School, the joint GM/ KJC and JCC of Pinellas County and Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services. Federation
Local benef iciaries include the Pinellas County Jewish Day School, the joint GM/KJC and JCC of Pinellas County and Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services. Federation donations also go to support such local organizations as Menorah Manor and the Jewish Press.
Internationally, the Federation supports humanitarian services in Israel and programs in other countries such as the former Soviet Union where Jewish life is in peril.
Volunteers are needed for both morning and afternoon sessions: 9 a.m. – noon and noon to 3 p.m.
Super Uniform Group in Seminole is once again donating use of its offices and telephones for Super Sunday.
“This year, the afternoon session, which runs from noon to 3 p.m., will be focused on being more family friendly. So while parents make calls, their younger children will be able to participate in supervised activities like creating their own tzedakah boxes and storytelling, sponsored by the Federation’s PJ Library program,” Bowman said.
A kosher deli lunch will be provided by, as always Jo-El’s Delicatessen & Marketplace for all volunteers. There will be prize drawings throughout the day.
While most volunteers are needed to make phone calls, there is also a need for several others to help with clerical duties.
“The theme this year,” said Bowman, “is ‘Super Jews, doing super things, on Super Sunday.’ By helping us this Super Sunday, you too can be a Super Hero!”
Super Sunday kicks off a Super Week of phoneathons.
