JOEL DAVID LOHR, 87, of South Pasadena, died Dec. 8. Born in Malden, MA he received his Bachelor’s Degree from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. He had played professional baseball in Boston during his youth and was a veteran of World War II, serving in both the Marine Corps and the Navy. After his service he worked for the VA Healthcare System, primarily as Chief of Pharmacy Services for the VA hospitals in Louisville, KY, Memphis, TN and at Bay Pines for over 20 years. He assisted in establishing the first hospital pharmacy residency program in the southeast U.S. and was actively involved in establishing pharmacy policy and practice for the VA at the central office in Washington, D.C. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Reid and Audrey Lohr; two daughters, Robin and Pegi; and a grandson. (David C. Gross Funeral Homes, Beth David Chapel)
PHYLLIS VERA LOVITZ, 85, of Clearwater, died Dec. 10. She was born and raised in London, England and graduated from the Pittman Business School. She met and married her late husband Julius in London during World War II and lobbied Parliament in support of war brides being allowed to join their husbands in the U.S. As a result she was with the first group of war brides to cross the Atlantic in 1946 on the troop ship, Queen Mary. She and her late husband were founding members of Temple B’nai Israel in Clearwater and she served as a past president of the temple’s Sisterhood and also Hadassah. She was active in the Morton Plant Hospital Auxiliary and tutored students at Plumb and Belcher elementary schools. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Alix Lovitz Baxter and Jeffrey Baxter, of Gainesville; Irene Lovitz of Costa Rica, Tracey Lovitz and Ken Sourbeer, of Gainesville; sister, Elsa Rosenberg, Henderson, NV; sister, Elsa Rosenberg, Henderson, NV; and a grandson.
